Around 60 people from all walks of life gathered opposite Town Hall here on Sunday for a candlelight vigil, praying for the quick recovery of the five-year-old rape victim in New Delhi. The volunteers demanded stringent punishment for the 22-year-old rapist, who is now in judicial custody.

Speaking to The Hindu , Kundan Singh said that citizens across the country should rise in protest against rape. “How long will the government remain a mute spectator? Why are the laws not stringent enough to punish rapists? How long should citizens sit idle?” he asked.

Demanding capital punishment for rapists, he said that the government must ensure that all rape cases are heard by fast track courts and disposed of expeditiously. “But for this, the government must ensure that there are fast track courts in all districts in the country,” he added.
