Campaigners make a splash at Ulsoor lake in Bangalore

Volunteers and guests at the event signed on a common board pledging their support to protect and rejuvenate the lake

July 15, 2012 08:54 am | Updated 08:54 am IST - BANGALORE:

While many hit the snooze button on a second Saturday, some residents gathered near the Ulsoor lake early to form a human chain.

With over 100 participants, the campaign, Wake the Lake, initiated by United Way Bengaluru, an NGO, seeks to draw the attention to the deteriorating state of lakes in the city. It is also to help the BBMP restore and rejuvenate the city’s dying water bodies that have been the victims of rapid urbanisation.

Since the launch of the campaign a year ago, UWBe has initiated work on two lakes — Kaikondanahalli and Uttarahalli. The initial results at these lakes are very encouraging, campaigners said.

Volunteers and guests at the event, who included cricketers R.P. Singh and Amit Mishra, signed on a common board pledging their support to protect and rejuvenate the lake.
