Ten people were injured when a cab collided with a car, two motorcycles and an autorickshaw before ploughing into a roadside tea stall on Chandra Layout Main Road late on Tuesday night.

According to the police, the cab driver, Uday Kumar, 37, was in an inebriated state and driving rashly. “He was returning home after dropping off a passenger in Nagarabhavi,” said Balakrishna Raju, the Byatarayanapura inspector.

Traffic on the main road was disrupted. Passers-by and the police helped the injured pedestrians, two bikers and the driver of the car that Kumar had rammed into.

“Fortunately, the road, which is usually busy, did not have much traffic when Kumar lost control of his vehicle. It could have been much worse,” Mr. Raju said.

The accident took place just a few yards from Vinayaka Nursing Home in Chandra Layout on the main road leading to RPC Layout. Soon after the accident, passers-by stepped in to help a two-wheeler rider. They shifted him to the emergency room using a wheelchair that they got from the nursing home. Four of the injured were treated at Vinayaka Nursing Home while the rest were taken to hospital in ambulances.

The owner of the tea shop, identified as Sathish, was grievously injured, the police said. The others are said to be out of danger. The police have arrested Kumar, who sustained minor injuries, and seized his vehicle.
