A 63-year-old man was brutally murdered at his office in Devarajeevanahalli, in the city on Wednesday.

The deceased is identified as Shams Ul Huda, an Islamic scholar. He also used to run the Al Huda Co-Operative Society, having its office at Eidgah complex in Tannery Road.

According to police, Mr. Huda was giving gold loans and running chit funds. He had deposited huge sum of money in Amanath Co-operative bank, withdrawal from which has been restricted due to orders from Reserve Bank of India.

Police suspect that Mr. Huda may not have been able to return the money to his depositors and this could be the motive behind the murder.

The murder came to light when one of the office staff came to work and saw Mr. Huda lying on the ground in a pool of blood. The police rushed him to Bowring Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

The Devarajeevanahalli police have filed a case and are investigating.
