From the 2017-18 academic year, Bangalore University is expected to function as three separate universities.

However, although it has been more than 20 months since the State government issued the notification about trifurcation of Bangalore University, there seems to be no movement on the ground. All affiliated colleges, land, buildings and staff continue to be under the parent Bangalore University.

Speaking after a meeting with officials of the university, Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy said that the an executive order will be issued to ensure that the three new universities function with effect from June 1. “The academic year will begin in July. By then, we will have appointed vice-chancellors for the two new universities,” he said.

Bengaluru North university will function temporarily from the Karnataka State Open University building in Kolar while Bengaluru Central University’s headquarters will be Central College. Mr Rayareddy said that the transfer of properties will take place shortly.

No funds

The State government is yet to allocate funds for the two new varsities. However, although the committee formed to oversee the trifurcation had submitted its report in November, the government has not taken any step in this matter.

The special officer for Bengaluru Central submitted a proposal for the road ahead involving an expenditure of ₹1,000 crores. The special officer for Bengaluru North came up with proposal involving an outlay of ₹485 crores.

Bangalore University, which has a deficit budget of ₹3.39 crore, has been asked to part with funds for the two new varsities. So far, the parent university has given ₹1 crore each to the two new varsities. On Thursday, another ₹2 crore was given to the two varsities.
