Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) will conduct a two-week vocational training programme for engineering students from May 27.
The programme will include an overview of telecommunications networks, an introduction to the principles of the telecommunication industry, mobile technologies, including GSM and CDMA, and emerging trends in telecom networking. Trainees will also visit the telephone exchange and transmission centre and GSM, CDMA, NOC (network operations centre), and MPLS (multi-protocol label switching) centres.
The course will span two full weeks, Monday to Friday. The trainees will be assigned various projects upon which they will be assessed. Reading material will be handed out in CDs to individual students. Upon course completion, each student will get a certificate including a performance assessment.
Each batch encompasses 30 studentsBanu Prakash of the District Telecom Training Centre said that previous editions of the same programme have had a positive response.
Who is eligible?
Eligible applicants include 2nd, 3rd and 4th year engineering students in the fields of Telecommunications, Computer Science, Information Technology, Instrumentation, and others, excluding Civil, Mechanical and Chemical Engineering.
While this programme does not offer a direct connection to employment at BSNL, the objective of conducting it is to provide students with exposure to the systems and equipment used in BSNL and enhance awareness concerning job options in the industry.
BSNL has suffered in recent years from a lack of staff equipped to deal with more modern technology. Therefore the course aims to prompt young engineers to refine their skills in up-and-coming equipment and increase their value in the job market.
