With August 10, being the last date to >file nominations for the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) polls , there was a huge rush at the offices of the various Returning Officers. The BBMP polls are scheduled to be held on August 22.

The State Election Commission had scheduled to conduct the polls on July 28. But the Supreme Court’s order gave the State government eight weeks time to hold the BBMP elections which had raised questions.

The Supreme Court did not make it clear as to when the eight weeks was supposed to begin — if it is from the date the judgment was given or August 5, the earlier deadline issued.

Sources in the SEC said there was no clarity on the issue. “We do not know when the order comes into effect,” the source said.

That apart, the SEC is also uncertain if the model code of conduct for the elections will still be in force.
