‘Brother-in-law threatened to kill me’

April 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - Bengaluru:

The woman, daughter of a reputed retired IAS officer from the State, married in 2011 against the wishes of her in-laws who objected to her being from another religion. It was the start of a tale of horror, she recounted in her complaint.

She has alleged that her in-laws had suffered a loss in their venture and were constantly demanding a dowry of Rs. 45 crore. She alleged that they were pestering her to get her parents sell their house in Bengaluru and get the money.

A senior police officer who received the complaint said that she alleged that her husband's elder brother had made repeated sexual advances, which she spurned. It culminated with him raping her in the Mysuru house on November 11, 2014 when she was eight months pregnant.

She alleged that her brother-in-law has firearms and threatened to kill her and her husband if she reported the incident.

“The victim’s husband has been a source of strength and support to her all through. He has rejected his family and has come forward, with his wife, to lodge a complaint against his family,” the officer said.

However, he added, it is now difficult to forensically establish the sexual assault, as the alleged rape is reported to have taken place six months ago.
