A nine-year-old boy died on the spot after a tipper lorry reversed and reportedly hit the parked two-wheeler on which he and his father were sitting. The accident occurred at Prajavani Layout near Devasandra here on Friday evening. There was tension on Devasandra road for a while following the accident.

The boy was identified as Rajesh Kumar. According to the K.R. Puram traffic police, who are investigating the case, the names of the victim’s parents are yet to be ascertained, as they are in an unconscious state and have been admitted to the Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital.

Based on statements of eyewitnesses, the police said, “Rajesh and his father were sitting on a parked moped. Around 6.30 p.m. the tipper lorry which was reversing to unload m,d and other waste material, hit the moped.”

The boy, who was trapped under the rear wheels of the tipper, died on the spot while his father sustained severe injuries, the police said.

Meanwhile, agitated bystanders and local residents attempted to torch the tipper. They demanded compensation for the victim’s family and caught the driver and beat him up him before handing him over to the police. The public also shouted slogans against the police. Traffic was affected for a while on Devasandra Road and peripheral roads.

The driver, identified as Durgappa (21) of Raichur, was severely injured and is undergoing treatment. A case has been registered against him, the K.R. Puram traffic police said.
