A two-and-half-year-old boy met a watery grave when he accidentally fell into a sump at an under-construction building, where his parents were working as construction labourers, at Ayyappa Nagar in Banasawadi on Tuesday evening.

Gautham was playing in front of the building when he fell into the sump. After their work, the couple realised the boy was missing. They searched for him for more than two hours in the area and returned home late in the evening. One of the labourers who went to fetch water noticed the boy’s body floating in the sump. He rushed him to Bowring hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

The doctors said he had died three hours before they brought him to hospital.

Gautham is the only son of Valmiki, a labourer hailing from north Karnataka, who had come to the city in search of work . The sump was constructed by the workers, who used the water for their daily activities. The 3.5-foot-deep sump was not covered.

A case has been registered at Banaswadi police station.
