Book on Vasudev’s works released
This 300-page book not only depicts the life and works of eminent artist S.G. Vasudev but also provides an insight into visual arts in the State.
On Sunday, also the 72 birthday of Mr. Vasudev, “Vriksha-Vasudev Avara Kale Mathu Baduku” (The Art and Times of S.G. Vasudev), was released here by writer and Jnanpith award winner U.R. Ananthmurthy. Another Jnanpith award winner and playwright Girish Karnad was present.
The book, edited by artist N. Marishamachar, contains photographs and works of Mr. Vasudev besides contribution by Dr. Ananthmurthy, Mr. Karnad, Arya Acharya, B.V.K. Shastry, K.V. Subramanyam, Y.N. Krishnamurthy, H.A. Anil Kumar, Vijaya and an interview with the artist by Latha Mani.
Terming the book as a “milestone in Karnataka’s visual arts history”, Mr. Karnad said: “This work is not only about Mr. Vasudev but it also tracks the history of visual arts in the State. Visual art movement in Karnataka got a boost because of his contribution.”
Recollecting his decades-old association with the artist, Mr. Karnad said that the artist could have made it big in the Indian film industry had he continued with art direction. Visual effect in “Samskara” is a testimony to his work, he added.
Earlier, Dr. Ananthmurthy, who released the book, said that Mr. Vasudev was among the best artists in the country.
“Art is not only seen but also read. Unfortunately, in India we can only see it because we view art in the standing posture unlike in the West where one can sit and view the works for hours,” he added.
