Bommanahalli residents protest demanding water supply

March 30, 2011 04:49 pm | Updated 04:49 pm IST - BANGALORE:

The spiralling water crisis forced yet another part of the city to erupt as residents of Bommanahalli Assembly constituency took to the streets here on Tuesday.

In a protest organised by the Bommanahalli Block Congress Samiti in front of the ward office of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), people came out in hundreds demanding water.

Samithi president C. Nagabhushan Reddy alleged that residents were not getting their share of the free supply through tankers by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) as it was “being diverted to wealthy and influential people”.

“Out of about 10 loads that the BWSSB and BBMP are sending, only three are given to the residents. Others are supplied to politicians and other officials, while the rest are sold to the people. For how long are these middle class people supposed to buy water?” Mr. Nagabhushan Reddy asked.

He said that Bommasandra, Bommanahalli and Singasandra were the worst affected while affluent areas like HSR Layout have been getting regular supply of drinking water.

Bommanahalli Joint Commissioner Shivabasavaiah assured the protestors that the problem will be solved. Mr. Reddy said they will wait for another fortnight for a solution before taking their agitation further.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson V.S. Ugrappa and MLC Dayananda Reddy participated in the protest.
