A total of 20 bogus voters were arrested in the city on Sunday when they tried to cast their vote illegally in Tilak Nagar police and MICO Layout police limits.

Eight women and four men, all from Kolar, were arrested by the Tilak Nagar police after Congress workers said that the 12 had turned up at Booth No. 214 at the KHB Quarters in Chickpet constituency, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Harsha said.

He added that some of them had fake Elector’s Photo Identity Cards (EPICs).

Meanwhile, the party workers who handed them over to the police claimed that there were at least 150 such persons who had come from Kolar and they had even provided the list to the police.

Rajkumar, one of them, said: “We were familiar with most of the voters here. When these people came up to the booth, we did not recognise them and checked.”

In another incident, the MICO Layout police arrested eight fake voters trying to cast their vote in booth 182 in a school in Devarachikkanahalli in Bommanahalli constituency.

Congress workers manning the booths said that they grew suspicious after they saw a number of people getting off a bus and coming in to vote. They alleged there were a total of eight such buses with hundreds of bogus voters parked in front of the government school near the polling booths.

The police seized six buses and arrested the bus drivers as well. A clash then ensued between the Congress and the BJP workers.

Police Commissioner Raghavendra H. Auradkar said that no cases have been registered so far in this connection and it will be decided by the Election Commission.

He said that there were hoax calls alleging that BJP workers were distributing food in R.T. Nagar and J.C. Nagar.

The police also provided extra personnel in C.V. Raman Nagar after a candidate complained it was short-staffed.
