BMTC buses across the city can now be tracked as the company announced the formal launch of its Intelligent Transport Solution (ITS) project which will provide for electronic ticketing and live tracking of buses to make travel easier.

The project, which is divided into three modules, Vehicle Tracking, Public Information, and Electronic Ticketing, was launched by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday. An Android mobile app to help commuters plan routes and know estimated time of arrival of buses was also launched at the event.

“In July, BMTC is also going to launch a smart card. Travel should be made commuter friendly and there must be more facilities for customers,” Mr. Siddaramaiah said. The Corporation is hoping that it will be able to plug revenue leaks with the electronic ticketing method and is also gearing up to monitor different routes to determine usage.

Besides the obvious benefits to consumers, BMTC will now also be able to track buses which are not in motion, parked in unauthorised spots, leaving the depot at the wrong times and deviating from their routes. “We will also be able to prevent buses on the same route leaving for the trip within a few minutes from each other (bunching). These buses will be monitored at our Command and Control Centre,” said Managing Director Ekroop Caur.

The BMTC app for iOS is due to be out by the end of the month. To download the app, click on http://bit.ly/1NMerEc.
