A 1.5-km thoroughfare along the Jayanagar stretch of Namma Metro — between Rajalakshmi Kalyana Mantap and South End Circle — will be developed as a model road jointly by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) and Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
According to highly placed palike sources, senior BMRCL officials, including Chief Engineer (Reach IV) Capt. Doddihal, met with Jayanagar MLA B.N. Vijaykumar, BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah and senior officials of the civic authority on Tuesday and discussed individual responsibilities.
The source said that the Namma Metro construction of Reach 4 of the North-South corridor (stretch between Rajalakshmi Kalyana Mantap and South End Circle) was almost complete. “At the meeting, it was decided that both BMRCL and BBMP would take up improvement and beautification simultaneously. The roads, footpaths, drains and medians would be improved according to standards set by the Indian Road Congress.”
BMRCL will give a makeover for medians, footpaths and roads along the stretch. Mr. Siddaiah has directed BMRCL officials to ensure that the IRC guidelines are adhered to. “This will ensure quality and will be durable for at least the next five years.”
Metro officials have been asked to ensure “chambering” (where the road slopes towards the drains on either side) while developing the roads along the stretch and to maintain the road width to 7.5 m on either side of the median.
“In some places, the road width varies. BBMP will take up beautification of the stretch by planting ornamental plants where excess space available, or else widen the footpath.” It may also use the space to construct an L-type drain. It will also spruce up roadside drains, shoulder drains and cross drains.
The Chief Engineer for Major Roads has been tasked to ensure that the drains won't need any remodelling or strengthening for another five decades.
The civic body is also looking at improved street lighting. “However, there will be no need to erect poles on the footpath or by the side of the road. Focus lights will be fitted under the metro viaduct. This will ensure that the entire road is well lit,” the source said.
These works are likely to begin next month. Both BMRCL and BBMP would soon initiate the tender proceedings for these works.
