It was a blend of a variety of cultures, food and languages at the International Language Fair held by the Department of Foreign Languages, Bangalore University. Students of all age groups put up stalls to display the tradition, cuisine and languages from countries like Japan, China, Korea and France.
The students at the stalls gave tit bits about the language as well of the culture of the region. Some women were seen in Hanbok, a traditional Korean dress, while showcasing the handicrafts of Korea. Besides, there wereseveral lip-smacking dishes from across the globe which included tacos, French toast, salsa and nachos, crepes and a variety of salads which were kept for visitors to taste.
It was a heterogeneous mix of students who consisted of homemakers, software professionals, entrepreneurs as well as those pursuing education. Forty-five-year-old Susheela B., who has been learning French for eight months now, said she was learning French as she was in “love” with the language.
Abhay Joshi, a software engineer and a student of Japanese, who was trying to woo visitors to try their hand with chopsticks said, “I am learning Japanese as I do not want my weekend to go waste. There are several job opportunities once you pick up the language,” she said. Madhushree T.K., weekend said she was fascinated by Chinese culture and food and chose to learn the language.
A screening of a Japanese movie with subtitles, book stalls, games and several cultural programmes were also conducted as part of the event.
