A black kite which had got tangled in manja string on a tree in Chamarajpete was rescued by Fire and Emergency Service personnel and wildlife rehabilitators on Wednesday.
The injured bird had got stuck on a 50-foot tall tree. It was taken to the People For Animals (PFA) centre in Kengeri, where it will be treated and housed till it recovers.
"The bird has a broken beak, which needs treatment," said Michelle Simoes, veterinarian with the NGO.
PFA rescued 35 black kites in April and more than 20 in May. "With the last three months being breeding season, many fledglings fall off from the nest due to wind, rain or dehydration," said Samhitha Kashyap, a spokesperson for the organisation.
Though the use of manja has reduced since the National Green Tribunal ban, many a time broken manja remains stuck on branches for a long period, say wildlife activists. "There have been cases of birds getting lacerations all over their body due to the glass on the manja," said Jayanthi Kallam of the Avian and Reptile Rehabilitation Centre. "More awareness is needed about the harm caused to the birds," she added.
