Declaring that it will stand by the government in protecting the interests of the State, the principal Opposition BJP on Friday said it was ready to accompany the State team to meet the Central authorities in New Delhi to convince them about the need to defer the decision to form the Cauvery Management Board.

Leader of the Opposition Jagadish Shettar told the Assembly during the discussion on the adoption of resolution that the BJP would join the delegation if the State wanted to meet the Central authorities regarding the proposed board.

He said the resolution to preserve water for drinking water purposes had been passed to protect the State’s interests. Expressing concern over Karnataka farmers losing their standing crops owing to non-release of water for irrigation purpose, he demanded a compensation of Rs. 25,000 an acre for them. He also demanded that the crop loans of farmers be waived.

Meanwhile, BJP State president B.S. Yeddyurappa, who is participating in the party national executive meet in Kozhikode, said: “We are with the State government on the Cauvery issue.”
