Bike taxis to become legal soon

Transport Department bows to popular demand.

April 14, 2016 08:27 am | Updated 08:27 am IST - BENGALURU:

You can ride a bike taxi without fear shortly. What had been termed illegal by the Transport Department is expected to be legalised after citizens bombarded officials with mails seeking legalisation of the service.

The move is likely to bring cheer to citizens who believe it would help make commute in the city more affordable.

Half the auto charge

Many of the bike taxis charge Rs. 7 per kilometre, which is almost half the rate of auto fare. Transport Commissioner Ramegowda said that they received feedback from several citizens that they prefer commuting by bike taxis as it is more economical.

“In the past, four aggregators approached us for permission, but we had not considered their plea as it is not legal. Now, we will frame rules and allow them to function,” he said.

Once rules are framed, the cab (bike taxi) aggregators will have to apply for permission with the Road Transport Authority.
