The fifth edition of the Bangalore International Film Festival (Biffes) will be held from December 20 to 27 to provide film-lovers a glimpse of the best in world cinema, apart from regional classics.

This is the second international film festival being organised by the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy.

The fifth edition is not a competitive one because of some technical problems. The competition section will only feature Indian cinema this year. However, there will be special recognition awarded by the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema Jury for the best Asian film.

Disclosing this to presspersons on Saturday, H.N. Narahari Rao, Artistic Director, Biffes, said that 140 films would be screened in this edition. The films would be screened in five screens (four in Lido complex and one at the Information Department).

Films would be screened under 10 different sections: Cinema of the World, Asian Cinema, Chitrabharathi (Indian Cinema), Kannada Cinema, Retrospective, Country Focus, NETPACK award winners, FIPRESCI (Federation Internationale de la Presse Cinematographicque) Critics award-winners, Special genres (anti-war films and centenary celebration of Indian cinema).

Basavaraj, Secretary, Department of Kannada and Culture and Information, said this edition would be low-key affair compared to previous one in view of the drought in the State.
