April 30, 2010 03:22 pm | Updated May 01, 2010 06:27 am IST - BANGALORE:

The Bengaluru International Airport has won the Best Emerging Market Airports Award in the Indian Subcontinent.

The other nominations in the category were the GMR Hyderabad International Airport, Bandaranaike International Airport and Malé International Airport.

BIA was declared the winner following the tabulation of the poll results from industry chiefs and leaders across the world airports, a BIAL release said. The award was declared during the second day of the Dubai Airport Show. In a release, Raj Menon of EMA Awards said the competition was tough owing to the strong sector growth, and the increasing awareness about the awards.

“In these times when the air travel industry globally is just grappling with the after-effects of recession, it is considered a major achievement for an airport to receive such recognition on a global platform,” he added. “We are thrilled. This award showcases the teams' hard work and dedication, and personally it is a proud moment for me.

It has been only under two years and this airport has received accolades for its operational efficiency on an international level,” said Marcel Hungerbuehler, CEO, BIAL. He said: “While this award is flattering, it pushes us further to continue with our dedication and sincere efforts in taking this airport to the next level of growth.”
