The Union Cabinet is likely to take up for consideration the long-pending proposal of the Karnataka government to rename the Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) after Kempe Gowda, the founder of the city.
The State government had sent the proposal to the Centre as early as 2009. But, the issue has been pending following resistance from several organisations.
While many wanted it to named after social reformer Basaveshwara, several other wanted it to be named after Sir M. Visvesaraya. Many organisations were also for renaming the airport after Tipu Sultan, on the ground that the ruler was born at Devanahalli, where the airport is located.
The Union Civil Aviation Ministry had cleared the proposal to name it after Kempe Gowda in April last year.
