The Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) activists on Wednesday staged a demonstration demanding severe punishment to those responsible for the Bhopal gas tragedy. The demo was part of the organisation's countrywide campaign.
V.N. Rajashekar, member, said the Union Government had failed to properly compensate the victims of the world's worst industrial disaster. “Those convicted should get rigorous imprisonment. The Government has perpetrated a crime on humanity,” he said.
H.G. Jayalakshmi, SUCI State Committee member, said: “The verdict (of the trial court) has done injustice to the victims. More than 20,000 people died and there are people still suffering [the consequences of] the gas leak.”
The protesters raised slogans against the Central Government and Warren Anderson, then Chairman of Union Carbide. They burnt Union Carbide's effigy.
