The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) is looking to rectify the oft-cited reason for interruptions in power supply: transformer failure. The power utility is undertaking a project called ‘predictive maintenance’ along with a private company, through which the technology used will enable Bescom to know the actual condition of a transformer before there is a failure.
Under progress
A press release from Bescom said the project implementation is under progress in eight divisions of Bescom: north (Peenya), south (HSR Layout), west (Rajajinagar), east (Shivajinagar), Bangalore Rural Circle (Chandapura), Tumkur, Kolar and Davangere (Hiriyur).
The release also added that by December, around 37,500 transformers in the eight divisions will be covered, to kkep a check on unscheduled power interruptions.
How it works
According to the release, a survey of distributing transformers will be conducted using the geographical information system (GIS) and they will be mapped.
Later, pictures of the distributing transformers will be taken to identify the hotspot using thermal image camera.
These thermal images, which indicate the intensity of hotspots due to overload or excess heat, will be uploaded online.
Periodic intervals
While this exercise will be done at periodic intervals, the faulty connections identified will be set right within a week by operations and maintenance staff, the release said.
