Piped cooking gas to homes is all set to become a reality in Bengaluru.

Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday announced that he would soon lay the foundation for the piped natural gas (PNG) project in Bengaluru.

Speaking to reporters after formally launching the "Give It Up" campaign in the city, the Minister said, "Bengaluru’s cooking gas will soon be supplied through pipelines. I will come back soon to lay the foundation stone for this ambitious project."

The contract for the project was being finalised, he said without elaborating.

20,000 in State decline gas subsidy

Earlier, 70 citizens, including eminent persons signed up for the "Give It Up" campaign in the presence of the Minister, by voluntarily giving up LPG subsidy.

Among them were retired headmaster B.Shanthappa; State Minister for Information, Infrastructure and Haj, Roshan Baig; actor Malashre; film director Rajendra Singh Babu; Kannada music director Madan Patel; filmmaker Chindodi Bangaresh; Food & Civil Supplies Commissioner S.S.Pattanshetty; and BBMP corporators Geetha Srinivas and Manjunath Raju.

Mr. Pradhan appealed to people who can afford to give up their LPG or domestic gas subsidy to join the Give It Up campaign. Nearly 20,000 people have done so in Karnataka of whom 15,000 are from Bengaluru, he said.

He said the Government had set a target of one crore consumers joining the campaign in the next one year. "The subsidy amount saved through this – which is nearly Rs. 3,000 crore – can be used for the uplift of the poor in the country."

The Minister felicitated a few who had given up the subsidy and said the names of those who joined the no-subsidy campaign would be added to the scroll of honour on the respective oil marketing company’s website.
