Bengaluru on Saturday night received torrential pre-monsoon rain coupled with high speed squall winds.

According to Indian Meteorological Centre, Bengaluru recorded a heavy rainfall of over 4 cm in less than an hour leading to heavy damages. IMD recorded 40.8 mm rains in city, 52.4 mm in GKVK, near Hebbal. The rain started at 8:40 p.m. and subsided by 9:30 p.m..

Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre sources said that rain varied in a range of 1 cm to 9 cm in various parts of the city. Western and southern parts of the city were the most hit.

The torrential rain was accompanied by a squall winds that recorded the highest speed of 50 kmph for a minute at 8:55 p.m.. S.M. Metri, director at IMD, Bengaluru said that the squall wind at 50 kmph was over 5 times the normal wind speed and was the main reason for multiple tree falls and other damages.

Mr. Metri said that Saturday's rain were caused due to a heat system and trough formed over south of Andhra Pradesh coast and off Tamil Nadu coast.

IMD has also forecast rains for the city for another three days.

BBMP has recieved over 110 tree falls, all attributed to the squall wind.
