Bengaluru, outskirts better suited: expert

March 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - BENGALURU:

S. Sreenivasa Murthy, former Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Karnataka and former professor of IIT Delhi, has urged the State government to set up the proposed IIT in or around Bengaluru to attract the talented and quality faculty.

Prof. Murthy, who is familiar with the functioning of IITs, NITs and Central universities, told The Hindu on Monday: “IIT should be established in locations where the travelling distance from the airport should not be more than two hours.” Chickballapur or Ramanagaram districts are the ideal locations for setting up the IIT, he said.

Prof. Murthy, who had earlier written to Union Minister for Human Resource and Development Smriti Irani seeking an IIT Karnataka, said the State had been educationally conscious, and getting quality faculty members to IITs would not be difficult, compared to many of the new IITs that have been suffering from problems of connectivity and ambience.
