Bengalureans lack road sense: Home Minister

March 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - BENGALURU:

Bengalureans, unlike Mumbaikars, lack traffic sense and this is one of the reasons for the increase in the number of road accidents, Home Minister K.J. George told the Legislative Council on Thursday.

Replying to a question by JD (S) MLC B. Ramakrishna, the Minister said, unlike in Mumbai, motorists in Bengaluru flouted lane discipline. With about 1,000 vehicles being added to the streets every day, strict adherence to traffic norms is crucial, he added. Mr. George said that, unlike in other countries, norms for giving licences are not strictly followed in India.

The Minister said that strengthening public transport, through systems like Metro, would ease the situation to a certain extent. He promised to fill posts in the traffic police in a phased manner.
