Belagavi district will be bifurcated: Srinivas

January 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 02:31 pm IST - BENGALURU:

Revenue Minister V. Srinivas Prasad on Thursday said Belagavi district, the largest in the State, will be bifurcated so as to take the administration to the doorsteps of the people.

The Minister, who visited the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee office here, said the announcement of the bifurcation would be made during the coming budget session of the legislature. Chikkodi or Gokak district would be carved out of the present Belagavi district, he said. At present, the district comprises 10 taluks. The people had made a demand that Chikkodi be carved out of the district.

Belagavi district also houses the headquarters of the Belagavi Revenue Division. Administering the district has become difficult as apart from the Belagavi City Corporation, there are 17 municipal bodies, 20 towns and 485 gram panchayats.

Mr. Prasad reiterated that more taluks and hoblis would be created to ensure effective implementation of welfare schemes of the government.

Just prior to the 2013 Assembly elections, the then BJP government headed by Jagadish Shettar had announced creation of 43 new taluks in the State, which is yet to materialise.
