The Karnataka Government has directed police to register criminal cases against four officials of the Beggars Relief Centre here in the wake of a spate of death of inmates due to their alleged negligence, Minister for Social Welfare A Narayanaswamy said today.

Joint Director Krishnegowda, Lakshminarasimhaiah (Superintendent), Bhagyalakshmi (Warden) and Hanumantharayappa (Chief Warden) would face criminal charges under various sections of IPC, he told reporters here.

About 20 beggars died within three days in the Centre in August, triggering criticisms against its maintenance besides the government facing the ire of the public.

Mr. Narayanaswamy said that all these officials have been placed under suspension and the government had ordered a Corps of Detectives (COD) probe into the deaths.

He said the biometric management system to maintain personal record of inmates and those who would be taken in would begin from tomorrow, as the authorities did not maintain proper records hitherto.

Currently, the Centre is home for 262 inmates and they are provided with medicare, food and other facilities, he said.
