The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) could now be held accountable for accidents caused by potholes on the city roads.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) B. Dayanand said the Traffic Department had identified an estimated 16,000 potholes in the city that were unfilled. “The list of potholes has been communicated to the BBMP to take action. If the potholes are not filled, the civic body will be held accountable for the negligence on its part,” he added.

Traffic police said their personnel had recorded the potholes recently as part of an exercise to ensure smooth flow of traffic. “When potholes are identified by the Traffic Department, officials will alert the BBMP as well,” said Mr. Dayanand.
