The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike on Thursday removed encroachments on storm-water drains in Thanisandra ward. Of the illegal structures, 11 houses and two factories were served notices to be removed.

With the monsoon around the corner, the civic body is planning to inspect storm-water drains, beginning with Thanisandra ward.

The BBMP believes that more than 340 kilometres of the total 750 km drain network has been encroached upon. The culprits include big builders apart from common citizens and owners of small enterprises. Many of the drains are in a state of disrepair. Some are open, posing a danger to passers-by. Some are filled with silt.

“There are a lot of encroachments. We are cross-checking the data on our records with the ground realities. This is taking more time than we expected. We need another month to complete this survey,” said K.V. Rudresh, Join Director, Department of Survey, Settlement and Land Reforms.
