Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike felicitated film personalities C.V. Shivashankar and Shani Mahadevappa besides two women, whose husbands had contributed for the cause of Kannada, in Bengaluru here on Wednesday. Each of them was given a purse of Rs. 5 lakh.

The two women felicitated on the occasion were Dhanbhagyamma and Kamalamma.

Kamalamma is the wife of Ma. Ramamurthy, a Kannada activist who designed the Karnataka flag.

Kamalamma lost her husband Ma. Ramamurthy and her sons in an accident in the late 1960s. Responding to the felicitation, she said that she was moved by the BBMP’s decision to honour her in recognition of her husband’s contribution for the cause of Kannada. Kamalamma lives and works at Ramakrishna Math.

Dhanbhagyamma is the wife of M. Govindaraj who was run over by a train during a pro-Kannada rail roko protest in 1970. Dhanbhagyamma earned her livelihood by working as a class 4 employee at a corporation shishuvihara till she retired a decade ago. Since then she has been rolling agarbattis to earn her bread and butter.

The BBMP councillors donated funds for felicitating the four persons.
