BBMP readies Monsoon contingency plan

July 31, 2010 11:28 am | Updated 11:32 am IST - Bangalore:

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has formed a monsoon contingency plan. According to a press release here on Friday, the measures include removal of silt and encroachment from drains and pruning of trees.

The BBMP has already taken steps to create awareness about possible flooding among those living in low-lying areas by putting up information boards, fencing the major drains and covering the tertiary drains.

In the release, Commissioner Siddaiah has said that if in one hour, the city receives more than 45 mm rain, it takes at least 30 minutes for the rainwater to flow through the drains. It is then that the roads and low-lying areas get flooded.

He has urged people to: ensure that children and senior citizens do not venture out near the storm water drains; avoid going out during the night when it rains; don't park vehicles or take shelter from heavy rain under trees; don't touch or go near electricity poles/ transformers when it rains.

Citizens may contact the zonal BBMP control rooms to complain about water-logging or flooding. The control rooms are: IPP Centre (22660000), Central (22221188), South (26566362), East (22975803), West (23561692), Dasarahalli (28393688, 22975904), Yelahanka (22975936), Bommanahalli (25732447, 25735642), Mahadevapura (28512300, 28512301), Rajarajeshwarinagar (28601851, 28600954).
