Puttanaiah, the 69-year-old retired surveyor who was run over by an SUV on the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike head office premises on Thursday afternoon, now has an amputated left leg and is awaiting surgery on his left arm. “His condition is stable; we had to amputate his left leg. He needs surgery for his left arm,” said medical supervisor Ajith Royan, Hosmat.

Mr. Puttanaiah, was at the BBMP office for some personal work and was walking past the parking area when his left leg got caught between the BBMP’s inspection bus and the SUV. Witnesses reported that the SUV driver seemed to have accidentally stepped on the accelerator.

The driver has still not been found. The police have issued a notice to the owner of the SUV to identify him in one day, failing which legal action would be taken against him. The identity of the owner was not revealed, although the police confirmed that it did not belong to any of the councillors. The driver has been booked under section 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and section 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC.
