As many as 73 shops were locked down by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) at the Jayachamarajendra Wholesale Vegetable Market at Kalasipalya, here on Friday.

Y.R. Gowramma, chairperson of the BBMP’s standing committee for markets, said the lessees of these shops had neither paid rent to the civic body, nor renewed their trade licences. “Just from these shops, the outstanding dues amount to Rs. 1.25 crore. We have already sent three notices, reminding the lessees to clear all dues,” she said.

15 days’ time She also said the lessees have now been given 15 days’ time to clear their dues and renew licences. “If they fail to do so, we will float tenders and reallocate the shops,” she said. The market, until recently, was being maintained by the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC). The BBMP council recently resolved to take back the market from the APMC. The reason for the move was the poor maintenance of the market by the APMC.

Shed removed Meanwhile, officials of west zone recovered BBMP’s property worth around Rs. 8 crore by clearing encroachments. According to a press release here, a cow shed had come up in a BBMP property measuring 90 ft by 40 ft opposite Dattatreya Temple in Vyalikaval ward. The encroachment was removed with assistance from the local police. The property has now been fenced, the release said.
