Lokayukta officials on Tuesday caught red-handed an Assistant Engineer of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) while he was accepting Rs. 50,000 as bribe from an electrical contractor to sanction permission for road cutting.

The trap was laid based on a complaint filed by Venugopal, a city based electrical contractor. Venugopal was to provide electricity connection to a school in Bommanahalli. As per the procedure, when Venugopal approached Assistant Engineer in Bommanahalli Vanaraju and sought permission for road cutting, the latter demanded bribe of Rs. 50,000.

Venugopal filed a complaint with the Lokayukta following which a team of officials trapped Vanaraju while he was accepting the bribe.

Vanaraju was arrested under the Prevention of Corruption Act and remanded in judicial custody.
