Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is collecting a mere eight paise per sq ft as lease per month from people to whom it has leased its property.
Kacharakanahalli councillor Padmanabha Reddy, who raised the issue in the BBMP council on Thursday, pointed out that 419 property have been leased to various organisations and are mostly situated in the core areas. Of these, the lease period of 204 property have ended. But BBMP officials have not yet taken possession of these property.
“These property are in prime localities and the lease amount is a pittance. The total area of these property is 78.19 lakh sq ft that is roughly 179.5 acres.
The annual lease is just Rs. 75.56 lakh, which means that the lease amount per sq ft is 96 paise annually and eight paise a month. The approximate market value of these property is around Rs. 4,000 crore,” he said.
Rs. 50 paise per yearMr. Padmanabha Reddy pointed out instances where BBMP had leased out nearly three acres each to two education institutions for 99 years for just 50 paise a year. Stressing on the need to increase the lease amount for all BBMP property to at least Rs. 8 per sq ft, he said that the schools were charging huge amounts from parents as fees and donation. He also sought to know the action initiated against the lessees who have violated the lease agreement with BBMP.
Mr. Padmanabha Reddy, who was supported by other councillors, said government property in the newly added areas should also be handed over to BBMP.
He urged the Commissioner to direct officials to maintain proper documentation of the BBMP’s property, besides making the digital record available on the public domain.
Yediyur councillor N.R. Ramesh said there was nearly 4,400 acres of government property in the newly added areas of BBMP, while Rajarajeshwarinagar councillor G.H. Ramachandra urged the Commissioner to write to the Bangalore Development Authority and request it to hand over civic amenity sites to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.
