The process to appoint a Vice-Chancellor and a Registrar (Administration) for Bangalore University (BU) is yet to make any progress.
With the term of N. Rangaswamy, who was appointed as the in-charge VC in his capacity as the senior-most dean in the varsity, coming to an end on December 21, the prospect of a new VC being named soon is unlikely as the search committee for the purpose is yet to be formed.
The State government, University Grants Commission, and Governor H.R. Bhardwaj, who is the Chancellor, are yet to name their nominees. The BU Syndicate has selected R.S. Deshpande, director, Institute of Social and Economic Change, as its nominee.
Background
Prof. Rangaswamy was appointed to the post after N. Prabhu Dev resigned in mid-October, four months before the end of his tenure, to head the Karnataka Health Systems Commission.
Acting VC
Prof. Rangaswamy’s tenure as the acting VC, which began on October 16, will end with the expiry of his deanship (of the Faculty of Arts) or until the appointment of a new VC under section 14(4) of the Karnataka State Universities Act, 2000, “whichever is earlier.”
G. Mohan Kumar, Department of Psychology, is expected to take over from Prof. Rangaswamy as the acting VC.
