The Bangalore City Railway Station, the biggest in the State, is set to add two more platforms to the existing 10, thereby gaining more capacity to operate additional trains shortly.
This was revealed by Sudhanshu Mani, Divisional Railway Manager of Bangalore Division, South Western Railway, here on Friday.
Mr. Mani was speaking to presspersons after a guided media tour of the station even as he completed two years as the DRM in Bangalore.
Best use of space
Mr. Mani, who changed the face of the City Railway Station and other stations in the division, said, at present, vast extents of land between Platforms 4 and 6 is being used for maintenance and cleaning of trains.
Proposal
Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES), in its recent report, had indicated that the space could be put to better use by shifting the maintenance facility to another location, such as Byappanahalli or Hejjala on the Mysore line. “We are working on this proposal,” the DRM said.
Suggestion
RITES had also suggested using the Binny Mill land adjacent to the city station to develop a railway hub.
“We’re waiting for the State government’s response,” Mr. Mani said.
New building
The Okalipuram entry of the city station will have a new building that will house a passenger concourse, ticket counters, basement parking, restaurant and so on.
“Though the building could go up to seven floors, initially there will be ground plus one floor,” he said.
Easy movement
Meanwhile, for easy movement of passengers within the city station, four escalators will be installed — near the foot over-bridge (FOB) at the main entry, passenger subway and for platforms 5 and 8.
Another over-bridge
Another FOB will be constructed behind the Divisional Railway Office.
