The Bangalore police have directed the banks to post security guards at all the ATMs within three days or close down the kiosks.

These stern instructions came from the Bangalore police chief Raghavendra Auradkar, two days after the brutal attack on the bank manager at an unguarded ATM kiosk. Mr Auradkar gave a three-day time limit for banks to provide security and also CCTV cameras and an alarm bell compulsorily.

According to ea police press release here on Thursday, Mr. Auradkar said that many ATM kiosks in and around the city's extensions do not have security cover posing danger to customers.

There were instances where criminals looted the ATMs and robber bank customers inside the kiosks and in some cases, they took away the money dispensing machine. Such crimes were happening as there were no security arrangements, he said.

Though the police held three rounds of meetings with banks to request them to provide security cover to the ATMs, nothing had been doe so far. Due to this lackadaisical attitude of banks, gullible customers were paying a heavy price, Mr. Auradkar said reiterating that the police would not allow the ATMs to function, if security measures were not provided by banks within three days.
