The Basaveshwarnagar police said they had solved the sensational March 1 ‘screwdriver murder’ with the arrest of Chandrashekharaiah (37). The murder, where the killer first strangled Renuka (48) with an electric wire and then stabbed her throat with a screwdriver, shocked the city for its violence.

Announcing Chandrashekharaiah’s arrest on Tuesday, the police said he had borrowed Rs. 6.5 lakh from Renuka and besides pledging her jewellery to purchase six autorickshaws. Police said Renuka had demanded that Chandrashekharaiah return the cash and jewellery. On March 1, he went to her house when she was alone, and had an argument. During interrogation, he told the police Renuka had slapped him while they were arguing, and so he went berserk. Following the murder, he fled.
