Baina beach: State may buy land to rehabilitate those evicted

October 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - BENGALURU:

The Karnataka government is considering acquiring land to provide permanent rehabilitation to the displaced Kannada-speaking people of Baina beach in Goa.

Kannada Development Authority (KDA) chairman L. Hanumanthaiah said the Goa government had been requested to provide land to rehabilitate Kannada-speaking people residing around Baina beach. If the Goa government fails to provide land, the State government would purchase land and it would cost around Rs. 15 crore, he said.

Homeless

The Goa government has evicted 300 families from the beach side and they have been rendered homeless.

“The authority has requested Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to make efforts to get a plot from the Goa government to construct houses for the evicted families.”

The Kannada Sangha of Goa has been asked the identify land for rehabilitating the families, the KDA chairman said.

Permanent dwellings

Last year, Minister for Tourism and Industries R.V. Deshpande held talks with the Goa government on providing permanent rehabilitation to the displaced Kannada-speaking people of Baina beach.

Most of the migrants are construction workers and they had been residing in hutments for many decades. The migrants said the Goa government had provided electricity and water connections to their houses and issued them ration cards.
