Three-month-old Neha Afreen who had been battling for life since Friday after being allegedly battered by her father, died of cardiac arrest here on Wednesday.
Doctors at the Vani Vilas Hospital said that around 10.40 a.m. she suffered a cardiac arrest and died 30 minutes later.
Reshma Bano, the child's mother, vented her ire at Umar Farook, her husband, who is alleged to have assaulted the child.
“My baby was innocent, and he killed her. He's a devil and should get the strictest punishment.”
Ms. Reshma, her mother Maqbool Bi, father Abdul Karim Khan and their shocked family members were then taken to the mortuary at Victoria Hospital nearby where they struggled for privacy among the scores of TV cameras and journalists, as well as local political leaders who came to the hospital.
The child was targeted by Farook because he wanted a “boy and not a girl,” said Ms. Reshma.
When the child was admitted to the hospital, doctors said she had suffered haemorrhages in her brain and retina, and had multiple bite marks on her thighs and buttocks. Though already on ventilator support, Afreen went into a semi-comatose state on Tuesday.
R. Premalatha, Professor of Paediatrics, told The Hindu that the baby's condition deteriorated since Tuesday night after she suffered repeated convulsions, twice on Tuesday and once on Wednesday morning.
After the post-mortem the body was taken to the residence of Ms. Reshma's parents at D.J. Halli for the last rites.
Meanwhile, the K.G. Halli police converted the charges against Farook from “attempt to murder” to “murder”.
During interrogation, Farook had confessed to the crime and multiple attacks on the child in the past three months, the police said. He had been remanded in judicial custody till April 21.
Karnataka State Human Rights Commission chairman S.R. Nayak said the commission had registered a suo motu complaint on the attack and directed the police to submit a report in two months.

Rest in peace Afreen anf Falak. You are both home as God comfort you
both. I'm sorry none of us with loving hearts were not there to help you
both. Help your country, help the world....help us to make the changes
in your memories. Sleep well our angels - Lala (Utah, USA)
Many centuries ago women were revered as being as close to the heavens as we could be. We give life and we bring life into this world. Our children were considered the very key to the future, and the most precious beings on earth. I'm angry (as I am sure many of you are.) at her executioner, her own father. Father's are suppose to protect their young-lings. Seeing this is just a tragedy, but its angering. I live in America and we are called uncouth and barbaric, and yet, this is what is happening overseas? At least here in America we trade life for a life in our legal system. If he lived where I did, he would fry in the chair.
Um, so, if the father confessed that he committed several attachs over a THREE month time period, why didn't the child's mother not remove her from such a dangerous environment? Isn't the mother just as much to blame for allowing three months of attacks to happen to her child? Just a thought.
I'm a parent of three college aged boys. I wanted a girl and did not get one. However, there's not a day that goes by that I think of what life would have been like if I had a daughter. She most likely would be the tough one and probably the smartest. She would have been "daddy's girl!" I cannot fathom how someone could bring a child into this world only to brutally terrorize and torture her to death.
I am still learning about Indian cultures and traditions, but discrimination against women is compeletely unacceptable. It should not matter where someone is from in society, it's all about doing what's best for their child and family. I read many comments and I believe the mother needed to feel secure and safe enough to come forward sooner. Her husband's family may have pressured her and threatened her, I don't know. What did his parents do? The apple does not fall far from the tree! My hope is baby Afreen returns in another life to a loving family. Peace be with Ms. Reshma.
My God, when you pick up a three month old baby in your hands, what does one see? You see bright little eyes, sweet smile, they want to talk and you cannot stop looking at the child. When you hold the baby it feels so good. Here a father who's supposed to care and defend her, kills her in a most barbaric way, worse than an animal. Even an animal protects its young. Mothers take heed and stand up for the rights of your child and yourself. Do not cave into society's stigma of "protecting a husband" that is less than a man. Better to be brave and alive with a healthy child than to defend a low life coward. Women can and do survive and fulfill their potential. Each and every women should be proud of herself.
God bless the child and that she spend eternity with her maker and angels.
This is such lachrymose incident that imagining how that baby would had
felt due to cigarette burns on its body , I couldn't stop tears
rolling down my cheeks .I am now sure that there are such monster people
existing in reality .That monster must get punishment equivalent to
homicide !
Thanks for THE HINDU to bring such ghastly story about gender bias forth
in public .
God bless all of you in India for speaking up for sweet little Afreena and against your customs. We here in the United States are no better-killing little babies even BEFORE they are born. Only the Lord Jesus Christ can cleanse us of all our sins, change the hearts of people and put an end to these heinous crimes. He may even use a tsunami or earthquake to shake us out of our complacency.
Have read the story and saw the pictures and read the posts. Am heartsick. We have three sons and one daughter, all loved equally. How a father could do this to his daughter I can not understand. Rest in peace little one, rest in peace.
OMG, I have cried while reading this. The pain in the mother's face is heart wrenching. To think ANYBODY could hurt an infant or child is beyond belief. To think a parent of all people could bite their childs thighs and bottom, and burn it with cigerettes is so disturbing that I won't be able to sleep tonight due to thinking of this poor baby. I can't help but ask myself why the mother didn't leave or seek help from a family member or something. I'm not judging her by no means. But she's asking for the harshest punishment available but in the same token she didn't leave when she realized he was abusing the infant. We'll never truly know why she didn't leave him but I'm sure she regrets it now. Some women feel trapped or are trapped and can't leave. I'm sure the guilt will haunt her everyday of her life.
My heart goes out to the mother, who lost such a precious child. You & your precious little one are in my heart, thoughts & prayers. May God bless you and keep you during this very difficult time.
My husband and I actually prayed for a baby girl and when she came it
was like heaven on earth. How could someone be so cruel....especially a
father. Despite what their society views are, that was an innocent
child. I cant begin to imagine how this mother feels and what that poor
child had to go through. I will keep the mother in my prayers, she lost
her child and husband. May God comfort her and her family.
It's so sad that this happened. Unfortunately, this is a cultural issue in many countries like India. Many years I read of how a chinese mother in law blamed the daughter in law for having a girl instead of a boy. The daughter in law, being led to believe that it was her fault, threw the baby out of the window and drank draino given to her by her mother in law. Little did any of them know that it is the male that determines the sex of a child. Many countries still hold to this erroneous view.
When I read this I was thinking how could a woman live with a man that is so horrible, and not recognize the insanity of this man. Does this man know that he determines the sex of the child. Him alone. So where was your man hood you crazy man. There will be no respect in the courts if they let him live. I am sorry for the lose of your child.
From an american mother of a baby girl myself, my heart just breaks for what this beautiful little girl endured and the pain her mother must now endure. That picture made me cry seeing a mother in so much pain. I am so sorry for her loss. I hope they can get justice for this horrible act.
How terrible. My heart aches for the family. What is it with these men? Women bring forth life. Men just seem to want to end life.
My heart aches for the mother of this poor innocent baby. Being a mother and a wife myself, I can only hope that the mother can get some help to be rid of this horrible man. If he wanted to make sure that the baby would be a boy, then adopt an orphan boy.
I agree with Pranav Singh, Yes the culprit needs to face the consequences of mudering a helpless infant. But, this only highlights the underlying state of mind of many who are still committing female infanticide with the active aid of healthcare workers including unscruplous doctors in India and elsewhere. Access to the basic nessecities of life by iteself will not change much. We need a change of our atitudes and sentiments towards a female child being born into a family thro education and by that I mean formal as well as cultural education.
I don't know how people have to heart to do something like this! I understand why most people want a boy... but at the end of the day it doesn't matter if your kid is a boy or a girl.... it's YOUR child... and you should't do anything to him or even her because they haven't done anything to you!
All human life has value. It should make no difference if a child is born a girl or a boy. I realize that India ia much different than the US in this regard but it creates the impression that India is a very backward and poor country. As a woman, I contribute to society in the US and have just as many rights as my male counterparts. I am treated equally for the most part and certainly much better that I would be if I had had the misfortune to have been born in India. My prayers with this baby girl's mother and grandparents. It would appear that the father is beyond hope with his wild thoughts of what is proper. He doesn't know what he doesn't know and further never will. He appears to be a product of his country's culture. Change has to occur at the grassroot level for attitudes to change. Hopefully this will start the change needed in India's attitude toward its women and its children. God bless
I am american so the whole idea of hurting an infant based on gender is barberic. The father should endure everything the baby had too. An eye for an eye. Maybe that will set an example for future baby killers. Remember God created us both male and female.
I don't understand how this brutality could have been going on for months? Where was the mother during that time & why didn't she report the abuse to the authorities???
My heart goes out to the mother and child. I'm proud of my family and it's a blessing to be given a child. To mistreat a blessing is against any religion. Also to the comment of the Abortion, wrong place, wrong time. Plenty of other sites to plea your case.
Such a tragic and horrid story, I am glad to see news outlets are finally shedding more light on such atrocities.I will be following this story to ensure I see a fair outcome; which unfortunately i question in this society.Nevertheless, thank you for the ocverage, I have forwarded it to many and will stay on the story.Police and society must be insistent on an appropriate punishment for such a horrendous crime, this kind of thing cannot be accepted and cannot continue in any place in the world. My sympathy goes out to the mother during this tragic time.
Surprised !!! I can't believe how fool and inhuman they are. A total psychos, but yes they grow from us only.lets try to make our youth generation stronger, only this can change the picture in coming days.
this is no less than a hell. such people should be sentenced death. which century are they living in ?
I am amazed to see how many readers are rooting for a death sentence, public hanging etc. for the culprit. this is very typical of a knee- jerk and a hidden mob mentality that infests us. Agree that Farook is the culprit and he deserves the sentence for his crime. But nobody talks about what gives rise to men like Farook. He is just a product of the system. Actually, lack of one. Illiteracy, poverty, lack of 'value based' education is the root cause of this evil. Why nobody cries for a death sentence for the rapists and murderers sitting in high places? 60 plus years after independence and we have a nation which calls it a superpower but has 50% of worlds open air defecators, 70% do not have access to clean drinking water and the most prosperous state(Punjab) has the highest drug addiction and female feticide. Something is grossly wrong somewhere and we all know what it is. Targeting one farook is not the solution to the bigger mess.
It is really saddening to know that such atrocities still continue in this day of advancement..but it is to be noted that the man alone is not to be blamed..woman too is responsible for such acts.the root cause itself is the structure of Indian society..revering male child and despising the female child..
This devil is not fit to be a father; he is world's ugliest creature. This devil should tied his hands back and should be handed over to the public for killing little and beautiful flower afreena they should tare him in to pieces and kill him. And his body should not be buried, it should be thrown in to the dustbin let the dogs, eagles, rats, worms and crows should eat his flesh, he is not fit to be even buried on the earth.
Such a beautiful little baby girl was killed and the father could be so insane. He needs to be punished.I feel very sorry for the mother too.
The idiot prpbably did not realise that girls are more affectionate towards their fathers than boys. I agree with the others that this guy should be given maximum punishment.
First baby Falak and now baby Afreen..such incidents present the horrendous state of our society. Depriving someone of the right to live just because of sex..unbelievable!!! we talk of scaling the space while we fail to reach out to others' hearts. Can't fathom what stage of civilization is this.. am finding myself unable to shun memory of the aggrieved mother holding Afreen's body in her arms...what a shame!we are tolerating all this in our times..
Very sad things are happening... Whom to be blamed?... the fellow who did it, and or/ we the society where he belongs...government, absence of proper punishment or... (list of course continuous)..But think!!! - animals are hurting other ones only for its survival (either for food or counter attack) but humans do hurt others for enjoyment to... Reasons are plenty!!! Is it true that human behave worse than animal at most of the time??? Human can control their emotions better than animal that gives him the liberty to enjoy meaning of life, values, ethics etc. Whatever may be the situations, whatever may be the education level or economic development (Animal behave better without all these things) human mind should always hold close and grow in values and ethics, otherwise ..... However, it can be observed that ethics and values are being evolved to a better state with time (from the beginning of Earth). Anything goes against this Evolution will finally become Extinct- nature will do that!
It is sad and shameful to come across such type of news in this developed country where we treat women as goddess and there is an old saying heard from our grand parents that BETI ROTI(BREAD) HOTI HAI Even in Islam our prophet (puh) loved his daughter the most rather than his sons.
arrogant barbaric act in the civilised socity
How many cases like this get unreported in India. India must be the capital of girl infant mortality. No right minded person will condone violence against infants. This sick problem lies deep in Indian culture which needs to be tackled head on by not only punishing the poor but also the rich who buy the service of girl fetus abortion. If the rich and powerful are seen to be punished the poor will think twice before committing such grotesque crime. India you need to start respecting human beings as you do with thousand of gods and goddess.
Sir, I could not control tears. Even i am father of a baby girl..I know how the baby would have suffered...The afreen father i don't like to state him as father who doesn't not deserves to be a father irrespective of any gender of birth he gives... He has to be given painful death... who did an innocent baby with cigarettes fire, bite and beat her to death..
Something very common everywhere in India but for the first time reached a larger audience.Worse happens and goes unnoticed in India. Resolution:Accept that we are cruel sometimes.
I am shocked at the state of events. After baby falak, we have one more news of such kind and such premature demise. People should leave the dream of India 2020 or calling it a progressive nation until such incidents are happening. Me being a girl is still unable to comprehend why are people so in mad love with having a boy child???
After reading the news item and the picture of the mother crying inconsolably, my heart bleeds and eyes filled with tears! Despite our tall claims and big speeches, it looks as if we are still living in a stone age! Gender discrimination, bias and male chauvinism continue unabated leaving a blot on the collective conscience of our society. What is even more worrying is the fact that the fascination for male child is still there in even educated and well to do Indians, which is very unfortunately, leading to stark variations in gender ratios. While I express my commisserations to the mother of Afreen in this hour of crisis, the father of the child should be meted out stringent punishment to set a precedent and deter such horrendous incidents in future.
RIP dearest. Can't imagine your pain. Truly said by Deepa Helplessness hurts...and haunts. We have to change our nasty traditions. Thing which doen't change is unusable. Law Enforcement is required to have only one kid per family. People having more than kid should be punished all the possible. After marriage the bride and groom's family have to live like a joint family. Giving equal right to all. How cruel is the system which says the girl has to leave her own family!
I am not that much into mythology but I know Lord Shiva stayed in Kailash(Part of Himalayas, i.e. father of Shakti) . Lord Vishnu stayed in Kshira samudra(Father of Lakshmi). So I believe the tradition was to stay at the wife's place!Don't know when & how it changed. But we womens being the generous clan demand and share equal rights by having bride and grooms family staying as a joint family. This is actually the need of this generation. Anybody who feels the plz join.
We must appreciate the courage of Afreen's mother who have come out and spoken about her husband's cruelty. I am afraid there are many who are suffering inside because of the community pressure. Whether it is hindu, muslim or Chirstian, we have dowry problem. Same set of guys who are cursing Farooq today, will not have guts to stop taking dowries either during their marriage or their son's. Whats the point in talking....implement your thoughts...that is important !
My God..I can't control my tears. May God take her and give her all eternal love more than what she would have got in this cruel earthly world. I wish she is born again as my daugther so I clould hold her against my heart..and protect her from even every bad eyes!
Father will be punished by the court as per the law. But what about the society(you and me)? How to punish it?
such a inhumane beast should be dealt with the highest punishment so that it serve as lesson to others. I heart really goes with Baby Afreena. My eyes are tearing in writing this. God rest the baby's soul in peace and my deep condoldence to her mother.
If this fellow is let of free, it will be a license to all other males to mistreat abuse and kill girls. Woe to this man. May he never find peace in life or in death. May Allah turn away his face from this man and cast him out into the hands of shaitan. May this man's soul burn in hell for all eternity.
I am wonder struck how Baby Afreens mother kept quite for three long months when her brutal husband was torturing the child. She should have confided in her parents at least of his act at the very outset. The poor child had to go through all this for being born to such hard hearted creatures.Baby Afreen you must be rejoicing with the Heavenly Angels to be away from such horror inflicted on you.
WE are to be blamed for not creating a just society and still discriminate between
boys and girls. ITS YOU AND ME...Lets learn a lesson and empower the underprivileged
Rest In Peace Child. You are with God now and will be happy for
eternity. You were an angel sent from Heaven. As a mother of 2 Gorgeous girls, i say i am proud to be a woman and even more proud to have 2 daughters.
The father has confessed to this crime so why does the news paper use the word "allegedly" in the very first sentence "Three-month-old Neha Afreen who had been battling for life since Friday after being allegedly battered by her father, died of cardiac arrest here on Wednesday."
This matter came to media attention, otherwise no one would care about
this incident. What about lakhs of abortion taking place in private hospitals? Is abortion less crime than this?
I dont agree with comments blaming the baby's mother.. she is only 19 years old.. she is still a child. What we need is child protection laws and efficient implementation at the panchayat/municipality level.
Cannot accept anything less than a death penality for curelity of this kind...It still is a lesser punishment..
I know my father from another country, he didn't want a girl child so he didn't provide care for me when I was in my mother stomach, but as I became an adult, about 38yrs old. He stated, that he was sorry that he didn't help me out through the years. I told him that it was alright, I end up taking care of him when he was terminally ill.for taht father he should love his children no matter what they look like or what sex they came out to be. he should get the electric chair for hurting an innocent baby;you never know that child could've save your life one day.
This is a very sad news and wish all the strength to baby Afreen's mom in this trying times. This is reflective of our society which unfortunately is a male dominant society. Which city is safe for the girls? Can any girl walk alone in the evenings? Or do what she wants without a guy troubling her? Is there a safe place (both within the home and outside) for her? Can we use our senior citizens who have held responsible positions with good standing in society to counsel such families. We need to build an army of such volenteers irrespective of our caste, color or religion etc. Farook is just a face. We can get rid of the symptom but the disease will still remain. A new face will come up from time to time. Let us all search for a lasting solution
Where is Faroooq's Parents? Is this the kind of people who are being presented to our society? Is this what you teach you Son's at home and schools? Dont know if he has been to one either. Its such an outrageous crime which only a devil can do. Animals do care for thier young ones so cant equate with them. Teach your sons and daughter's what is LIFE and not feed them to be criminals. The guys parents need counseling more than the guy who did the crime. He seems to be the tip of the whole iceberg.
Oh God! An Indian man subjects his own 3-month old baby to such a horrendous act of torture? Something that is unimaginable has actually happened and we have witnessed it. That Indians and of their Asian counter-parts prefer male children over female is a shameful fact and this has been going-on for centuries. However, I don't believe any Indian father has ever stooped to this level to torture his own tender flesh and blood just because it happened to be in a female form. To me personally, this is an indication that in at least a section of our current society, individuals would not hesitate to torture & destroy their own sons, daughters, parents, brothers, sisters, etc. for their own personal gratification. Even if a tiny minority of 0.001% of the individuals in our society exhibit and practice this behavior, they will be ruining our society as a whole.
The easy route we can all take is recommending harsher and harsher punishments for people who commit acts like this. The harder task for us is really to eliminate the kind of dogma that creates brutes like this - so steeped in their stupid prejudice that they will commit such heinous crimes. Our entire society should take the blame for allowing this thought process against girls to continue. Punishing this one person will not deter another from having the same views about girls. It is the viewpoint that is the culprit, not just the person.
Another lesson we need to learn from this is a abject failure of our
education system. It is important and good that people of all backgrounds are getting a shot at the elite institutions of higher education. But the system fails totally at moral and value based education. No-one is born with an ingrained idea that daughters are a curse. These medieval ideas are built into them by social interaction, which appears to be of an extremely low standard presently. The class room is where boys and girls sitting together are supposed to learn that each one of them is an equal human being. Unfortunately, these ideas aren't taught. Instead, the teachers thresh out some rules for people to "get into IIT" (I have seen teachers doing it) and a whole lot of rubbish that hardly helps us in any way. However the manner in which Indians have come forward to register their protest, irrespective of religion or caste, is extremely heartening. No amount of soft power or double digit growth can compensate for this barbarous act. This proves without doubt that there are two Indias -
one that is championed by the shrill call of MP's and their ilk and the other where people fight for children that are not theirs and fathers beat their children to death - not a momentous act of passion but a regular demonstration of violent hatred towards something beyond our control both morally as well as practically. Netas are unanimous and immediate when they want pay raises or when they get slapped by frustrated individuals. Where are they when defenseless babies are beaten to death? The entire Parliament should burn in shame that such acts continue abated 60 years after the British left our shores.
Sorry, to hear we lost a young life. Death to Farooq will not solve the problem. A lot of education is needed. We should make sure everyone understands that a daughter is as good as and as important as a son. Hope the family finds peace.
Sad to see innocent children killed by cruel parents. I wish the mother had brought this to the notice of police before the child had suffered all that beatings. A stringent law on child care is essential in India or we may see so many Falaks and Afreens. Girl or Boy ...a child abuse must be met with stringent punishment.
When everyone talks about the barbaric act of Farook, I wonder if anyone ever did think of his financial, educational aspects... I don't mean all he did is correct, but Indians it is high time to raise the slogan 'food and shelter for all Indians', not just talking about a single media projected event, there are thousands unsaid of this kind, still going on. We have to stop this !!!
A few years back I remember watching Karathamma a Tamil movie by the great Bharathiraja dealing with the subject of female infanticide rampant in some Southern villages . Apart from handing out a few awards I am wondering whether any concrete steps have been taken by the Government to root out this evil practice.
Really cannot believe. I would think people would want a girl these days. This is not limited to lower middle class but very well educated persons as well. The other day I heard an IT engineer declaring proudly that he and all his friends except one had boys. Now, who are they going to marry?
we can blame only to his father for such inhuman act towards the child for being wanting a boy child. But this shows a default part of our adult literacy system.Teaching how to read and write only will not reduce such incorrigible acts. We need to emphasize more on teachings that will reveal an optimistic attitude towards the girl child and related social evils. Despite many programmes & policies introduced still there exists the evil ideas and acts.we need to think.
MAY HER SOUL REST IN PEACE.
I have a 16 month old daughter - I can not imagine how can this be done by a
human being.
I guess India should adopt Arab countries policy for such cruel acts.
Eye for eye. That should happen in public so that people doesn't repeat
such cruel acts. Anything that impact kids directly has to be treated
seriously and harsh punishments should be given.
Instead of simply getting emotional and displaying emotions publicly, the root cause of this malaise against girl child needs to be addressed and strict solutions must be implemented without dishonesty. Granting girls equal status socially and financially and also ensuring that girls get that equal status by standing up for their rights in our lives will be really helpful -- then these incidents will not happen.
It is really embarrassing issue that the people are still wanting boy child. There must be awareness among the people. He was given punishment such that no one should dare to do such sort of brutal activity.
baby afreen indeed met a sad demise..she was completely innocent..the
man who was supposed to protect her is the one who is behind this
horrendous act..we all get to hear such news but i would like to raise
a question on her mother that why was she quite for three months..a 3
months old would always be near her mother, then why didn't she see so
much torture marks on her child's body..the man did not love the child
was a clear indication that the future holds something not good..the
mother did not raise her voice for her baby..and today she cries for
her..she was ultra late in her response and the baby paid for it..i
want to say that psychopaths like this man will continue such acts but
women need to raise their voices.and should not fear the
consequences..and god knows when such gender reservations will end in
this land where deity of learrning, wealth and power are all
goddesses..
What I can see is the apathy of the media crew... Just for the sake of breaking new making the life of already shocked mother worse.
This is a blot on humanity. He should be given the severest punishment for such a heinous crime. Mothers (who are females themselves)whose children face such situations shoudld stand up for the right of their girl child and defend them from such monstors.
Beastly act! Girl or boy, its a small infant... How can anyone even think to harm such a tender child? I wish the father gets the highest order of punishment...
This is one of the saddest day and do not know how many are happen which remains unknown. How we can boast for our civilization?
Some times I feel the punishment in Arabian countries are suitable for
some situation.....
Since he has admitted the mistame, where is the question of trial . He should be instantly punished. Trial takes a lot of time to punish and the people will forget the incident too. As such , judiciary should give an indication to all that law is a proactive one basing on need and situation.
I can't find words. And I agree with Neeraj-ji.
Why is her mother breaking down now??
I have two children and if they are in any kind of pain, Then
I feel the pain right away. God had very good reason to not help the doctors I think....he was scared that the child would be placed back in the same home!!!
How many of you support encounter?.
Give him such punishment so that he cannot become father again...he must under go high degree torture and left alone with no help...
Encounter..... Best solution to stop atrocities against kids.
why should a baby suffer fr father's inability to generate Y..he should hv killed himself for that than harming the baby...such ppl should be stoned to death so that nobody wud even dare to do such heinous thing again..
only tells me that we are still barbarians with intellect.
Pls god end this world....start a new world.... farooq should be ended like he should be not able to produce babies... and he should be banned from the society....Government laws..shame on u...
Dear all, A LESSON TO LEARN. First of all every one must know that the gender of new born is linked with father not the mother. So, the father is responsbile for gender not the mother. It was a shame that he killed his baby - a crime done by him in ignorance. He must get severe punishment, I mean he must be put to death. Secondly, his wife must divorce him immediately. Unfortunately, people do not know what FATHER really means. We all must know that Father means the most merciful while son and daughter means the most obedient. Thus ignorance lead to crime. Therefore, severe punishment must be given to him so that the next person think a million times before doing such an act. WILD ANIMAL under HUMAN SKIN.
Bite marks ??? What was he trying to do ?He should be skinned alive.
This shows how great our India is. Centuries old civilization. We are proud of useless and baseless things. Nothing is working in India. WE will be superpower in 2050 and what will we do kill our girls, burn them for dowry. We can spend thousands on watching IPL, Khan movies but our mental setup is still the same. Girl child is unwanted. Either you can kill them in womb or kill them after they are born. Abortion is still common. Nobody fears law. Just recently I come to know one of my husband's f'd they had 2 abortion just to have a boy. And he is in Mumbai (Metro City). When will our mindset change. God knows. Hanging one person will not solve any problem. Changing our mindset is important. Better education, proper upbringing. Boys are no better than girls. We need to understand this at root level. I hope India will wake up now before it is too late.
Here many people recommend death penalty for the murderer and some blame on the society. Those who are advocating against Capital punishment, please realize that to have an Utopian society is just a dream. It is a fact that we live with these parasites. We cannot be rehabilitating murderers and rapist hoping they will mend their ways. Once they commit these heinous crimes, they seize to exists as humans and they should be awarded death penalty right away. For a garden to flourish, we have cut the weeds. We cannot be replanting these weeds somewhere else. The same goes for humans too.
First Baby Falak, now Baby Afreen, how sick a society can we get? What happened to all the money spent in girl child schemes?
The baby girls of India need special protection. I hope the government spend more on education to parents and facilities for mothers if they are not getting help from their families. Baby Falak and Baby Afreen should be the last girls who are left to suffer . If anyone suspects such crimes they should inform others.Women should stay with their parents for some time after birth so they get support wherever it is possible and government should regulate the age of marriage of girls.
Why is her mother breaking down now... the accused has said that he tried to kille her several times in the last three months... what was she doing at that time?? he kept on burning her from cigarette and she didn't utter a word?? whatever Umar has done is horrible but reshma's fault cannot be ignored also.
Im sorry ........I dnt how a father do this to his own child
Isn't it a result of a perverted mindset of a society where females are considered lower, burdensome, expensive and, objects of pleasure and money making. Aren't we a society where discrimination is being practiced at all levels? Be it Caste, gender, race, region, religion or ideology we tend to discriminate, pull down others, make them vulnerable and crush them. The ignorant and the poor with this perverted mindset become panic and get involved in female infanticide. The smart and the rich do female foeticide, trafficking and flesh trade. Both Falak and Afreen represent millions of girls killed both before and after birth and millions of girl children and women still facing all kinds of discrimination and abuse in our society.
He should be hanged to death.
If there's some severe punishment given to these type of people, the so called human rights commission comes into act and will demand that the punishment should be retrieved. Where is the HRC now? why was there a protest for the killers of rajiv gandhi last year? We the people tend to forget things very easily. Just ask about Afreen by 10-Apr-2013, no one would remember, except that media will publish sensational news of condolence message on 11-Apr-2013.
Hi All, Media is kept very busy these days. Crimes against women, scams, inflation and the latest 'battered baby syndrome'. What is happening???Its time to strengthen the law. This country needs an example that if you violate the law, you are dead. Human rights should be asked to stay out of law enforcement. Fear of committing a crime and strictness of law needs to be imbibed. Lot of people also blame the government for their inaction. Please keep them out of this. They are busy amassing wealth (Swiss, Bermuda, Mauritius etc etc) and watching porn. GOD save the women of India!!!!! (within the Indian boundaries). Indian women abroad...you are safer. The million...no billion...trillion dollar question is who will strengthen the law when the law makers are busy???? Soon we will get a new tagline - the land of cultural shocks...!!!!!
He has killed an innocent baby. He has killed his own blood. When will India come out of all these discrimination against girls. Are we not human beings??
May God give strong heart to Afreen's mother. Farooq will be given a strong punishment which will be lesson for lot many Fathers like Farooq. This is really a shameful act which i have ever seen in my life time. He should be punished.
Why do guys forget that only a girl can give life - be it a girl or a guy??? People like farooq wouldn't have come 2 this earth if it was not a girl...his mother was also a girl...Guess there will be one point where a guy will have to marry a guy!!! The biggest problem will be solved...they can give birth neither to a boy nor a girl!!!
When the idiot father was torturing the baby afreen that time where was afreen mother, maybe she had been know him about his character and how can she live three months baby alone with him and won't she has commonsense to save her baby.if she is human being she might have saved her baby afreen with him
Long live indian culture, another success story of person, who is trying do justice to indian culture. Dowry deaths, female infanticide are part of our culture(though the great immature indian mentality may not accept) and this is just a modification of it.

I am a father of a single girl child. Today I am proud of her as she is persuing her BE in a far off college in Maharastra. I am from Assam.I have given her enough freedom in choosing her career and have never interfered in her choice of studies, dress. She has evolved herself to be a beautiful woman today, whom i respect and adore a lot. Comparing her with the unfortunate girl child gives me immense sadness and feel quite ashamed that we live in a great country like India with such narrow feelings. Baby Afreen's father can be called a human being but something evil controls him. People like him should not be spared and best punishment for this guy will be public hanging.
Afreen's mother should have reacted long back. The society is such that every woman had a fear of getting abandoned by husband. Women open out only when only their patience is tested this hard. This mindset should change. If only Afreen's mother gathered her guts little earlier, and made a bold decision, the little one would have been saved, who knows...?! Sad...
Only a Tsunami can clean India once for all. Systems cannot be changed, policitians cannot be changed, people mindset cannot be changed, laws cannot be immeplemented, Crime keeps going on and on, people comment and forget. Only God can save India. In India any criminal/policitians can get away if he have money and good advocate to fight his case irrespective of wrong or right. Thanks to people like Jethmalani who only fights for people who are wrong and save them from law. No one should take up Farooq's case supporting him and his act. But in India only money matters and Farooq can also become celebrity and people like Ram Gopal Verma will make a movie for him.
I am inconsolable..What did the poor girl do ? I am sure Mother Earth is also weeping for the dastardly act committed by this sinner ( See the Massive Earthquake in Indonesia today ). Imagine the pain she must have underwent while undergoing torture at the hands of this monster !!! God where are you ?
Tears!!!! Very sad. How one can do this? He should be punished for Death Sentence; Of course, the socio-psycho conditioning which prepared him to do this heinous act can't also escape from its responsibility(society made up of and run by men only for men is the real culprit) However, one who does this in any circumstances deserves nothing less than Death Sentence.
How'the father can do like dis for his own chiid i dont know he wants to be punished very cruely the persons should scare to do dis
May the soul RIP. May we acknowledge that there is a bias towards boy child across the complete spectrum of Indian society, irrespective of religion/ caste/region.It is impossible to change the perception overnight. The government, the civil society and the political parties cannot feign ignorance about this.We need affirmative steps from everybody, including creating awareness among the children through formal education, to make the next generation understand that all humans are equal irrespective of gender/faith and they have equal rights.
Oh Lord I feel so sad to say tht am part of this society....I wish this world ends right now ...........can't control my tears...being mother of 7 month old baby, I just cant control my emotion......How could he.........ah my heart flows for that tender beautiful soul.........
to hell with humanity and amnesty reports... these cancerous and heartless monsters deserve nothing less than death penalty and dare anyone who asks for clemency if he is sentenced to death. How can such butchers deserve a human life??
Not denying that he deserve maximum punishment but just think why he did it. Is it because of the ill fated society, in which a person have to spend more money to grow a girl, or for her marriage or the customes which always insist to spend money for girl even after her marriage? Stop dowry. Don't spend more on marriages.
Now what are you going to do, O ye who are against capital punishment! Do you want to put such an animal in jail to give him time to understand his 'mistake' and rectify? How many more children should die? Be bold! Make a statement that such acts WILL NEVER BE TOLERATED. Everybody directly responsible for such acts will and SHOULD hang!
It deserves the harshest punishment. Now the courts will take their own time and people will forget. Its important that when the issue is fresh , swift justice is meted out so that the message goes out.
Being unable to control the emotion, I wonder how could a human being do such ..... things to a baby. Oh my Afreen.. I have no more words.. May the Almighty give you what you deserve..
How many Nehas Falaks will it take India to learn to behave like a civil society. Just punishing these criminals wont make the cause of the crime go away. Yesterday it was baby Falak today it is baby Neha tomorrow another baby. How many will Indian society tolerate and show sympathy for. It will get used to just like dowry deaths violence and rape of women and girls now kinning of babies. This is called as a Darwinian society where the fittest will kill the weak and meek and do what ever it takes to get what they want. Look around you please look at all the poor people you shoo away ignore turn your face away when sitting in cars and don't give a damn about. This is the society you have created. You cant blame the British Pakistan etc for this. You Indians have created this abhorrent society with all its cruelty towards fellow human yet on a day to day basis you act if nothing is wrong. Indian society needs to hang its head in shame today as they have killed baby Neha today. RIP.
For cases like this We should start punishments which are followed in other countries, We should cut his genitals and feed it to dogs
Farooq is just tip of iceberg.. Problem is with our bloody society .. When will we became a modern society where everybody has equal role in society irrespective of sex.
Should not this guy get an exemplary punishment for his heinous crime? I can't believe a man go so low to kill his own baby child for being born as a female? I absolutely agree with the points above, put forwarded by Mr Indranil Majumdar.
But the buttom line is why we still have that kind of mindset that boy is better then girl child. It is us as a society who is responsible. Why girl child is naturally asked by moms to help her in household work, why not guys are asked for the same,y we have to be more protective towards a girl child when she grows up.. A death penalty wont change this mindset, It's the way our upbringing is. During our education our minds has to been moulded with respect to all these issues.
Kudos to Reshma, the mother who insists on the hardest punishment for her husband. More women should stand up against this kind of atrocious attitudes.
May God bless the mother and her family with courage and confort. I cannot control my tears to know that Afreen is no more. The barbaric farooq need to be hanged immediately. Hope the story may bring some positive change in the society towards female infaticide and dowry system.
It's most shameful for our society. Just cannot imagine. Our laws are good. But those laws cannot protect the baby - our future. Government is callous. Right bodies are also same. They act where they get popularity only. Are our beloved politicians, are our so called social workers listen the cry of that baby? Oh GOD! How long we take to become civilized?.......tear
I truly agree with all that what Farooq did was very wrong but what we all fails to see again & again is what actually has forced him to take such an extreme step - it's the social setup we have got. We as a society always ask parents to pay huge price of having daughter. Farooq is not the one imported from 'The Hell' but by product of our own society. It's an eye-opener for all of us - calling again and again for huge social reforms. As one of friend often tell me - 'No one is good or bad but it's the circumstances that ask people to do good or bad.'
I will our law allowed a person to be battered to death. That would have been the apt punishment for people like Farooq. The poor baby. May her soul rest in peace.
This guy deserve severe punishment and I would say Death Sentence will be far less compare to life of Innocent infant.
This is one of the saddest day for our country.......how can one be so brutal........
Mr Farooq (It is shameful to call him a father), must be tried for Murder, homicide and given the most severe punishment. There should be further investigations of similar practice in B'lore and elsewhere.
This is so sad and condemnable an incident. How do we stand to dispute an occurrence, taking place of which, is simply not in our hands? Whether it is a baby boy or a baby girl, it should be accepted gracefully and gratefully. We should have trust in God; He only knows what is best for us.
It is just the reflection of the mentality prevailing in our society. Though we are thought to be educated, what is the real education in true sense. Doctors treated human bodies like a butcher, remove organs from body out of greed. Politicians too are on the front side in this race. Is this the real picture of a society. We cannot finger at poor and uneducated, rich and educated are forerunner in this race. This shows depletion and erosion in moral values in our society.
The people going for abortion should be cursed and brought into the news for the same insane and shameful act. Is abortion a fashion and girl killing a brutal act ? Why is this hypocrisy ?
Falak, Afreen, how many more????
Literally moved to tears. Its good the girl passed away than surviving in this bloody hell.Don't know where the problem lies in the society? If the father wasn't happy with the girl he could have surrendered the girl to any home;but how come he dared to do this to a baby.Indeed heart-wrenching!!!! Its scary to think how a man goes to the cruelest extent!!! There's no point in punishing this so-called father,he is not a third person to sentence him in jail or for capital punishment. The best is to isolate him from the society, make him feel the pain of that baby. Instead of building ICSE schools, first lets teach our kids basic human values, moral education, compassion towards fellow human-beings and animals. Shameful to say we are human beings.
This happens because criminals have no fear of law. They know that the present system is soft on them. They know that even if caught, they can get bail. And even if jailed, they can still live a life. There is nothing that can prevent the criminal from committing a crime. Hang a single murderer in public then see the results. Many many innocents life will be saved, criminals will think 10 times before committing a crime.
Can the supreme court explain whether this case will also be treated as 'Rarest of the rare' case? If one analyzes, the root cause of all problem whether terror attacks or family violence and other forms of extreme cruelty in India, where people easily get away with - including cold blooded cases such as these is lack of proper law in black and white - murder should mean an automatic minimum sentence of DEATH and not the maximum sentence of 'a few years'. In other words, India really needs a MANDATORY DEATH SENTENCE LAWS which treats all forms of murder alike. In places such as Singapore,Saudi Arabia, it is usually prison term followed by the execution; In USA, death row is normally 10 - 30 years ending with the execution. The root causes of abortion of girl child is dowry-dowry complaints should be tackled swiftly and divorces should be granted and jail terms should be defined properly. If a marriage/live-in or child birth is not registered, it should be treated as a criminal offense.
Death penalty is less for a person like farooq
hang him publically
WTK?! Of course this guy has to given the maximum punishment. On the other hand, I suppose the route cause should be the social practices like dowry and other rituals! Why not we do something about it??
.... and Indra Nooyi, Chandra Kochhar, to name few, are from this country only....Can you believe this? If the father is given death sentence also will this issue get resolved? Few reasons why one wants a boy: They feel - which is obviously wrong :( 1.Boy will carry forward father's name (apparently his title) To resolve this : Can we just remove the titles from our name. Is it so important? 2. For poor families, boy can support the family at a very young age which a girl might not (at that age, except prostitution). To resolve this: Child labor laws should be very strict. Initially it can be a crisis leading to lot of children loosing jobs but please look at the broader picture. 3. Male-ego To resolve this: God knows how? I don't know what other reasons can be...if any body knows please do comment.
extremely shocking news....how does one have the heart to batter/kill an infant baby.
I am really surprised that person like Farooq are still kept alive. He should be given the hardest punsihment. Being a Father I can understand the mental stigma & torture her mother must be running through. Punsihment to Farooq ahould be like as NO person dares to do anything like this in future.
Throw him in to cage of Tiger!
Sir, I could not control tears.
