With the December 31 deadline to provide security at ATM kiosks around the corner, the city police reiterated that top officials of banks would be held responsible and booked as prime accused if they failed to meet the deadline.
The police had extended the deadline for banks to deploy security guards round-the-clock and install CCTV cameras and alarm systems at ATM kiosks.
The measures were introduced following the attack on Jyoti Uday, a Corporation Bank manager, in an ATM kiosk at the busy N.R. square area in November 2013.
The banks had approached the police seeking more time to implement the security measures.
“If the banks fail to implement these measures before the deadline, the general managers of the banks will be booked under section 188 of the Criminal Procedure Code (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant),” said Alok Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order). The jurisdictional police have also been instructed to make a list of banks that have failed to comply with safety norms.
They will conduct a survey of the banks in the jurisdiction from January 1, 2015 to check whether the measures have been put in place.
The police have already extended the deadline twice as the banks had requested more time.
