After a day of drama, protests and walkout by the Opposition, the State Assembly on Monday passed the Karnataka Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill, 2015, to make way for splitting the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) into two or more corporations, for ensuring smooth administration.
But the Legislative Council, where the government does not have the numbers, will continue to debate the Bill on Thursday.
The Janata Dal (Secular) and the Bharatiya Janata Party were determined to stall the Bill in the Council and both parties had issued a whip to their members to stay in the House. However, only one member, BJP MLC V.Somanna, got to speak on the Bill which was moved to the Legislative Council late in the evening.
Adjourned
As time was running out, Legislative Council Chairperson D.H. Shankaramurthy adjourned the House to Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court on Monday directed the administrator of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahangara Palike not to take any policy decision till April 22 and also restrained the State Election Commission from declaring date for elections to the BBMP council till then.
