Leaving her purse behind during a function proved costly for former athlete Ashwini Nachappa, who became poorer by Rs. 2.47 lakh within minutes on Tuesday.

Ms. Nachappa, who was attending an inter-school sports meet for children with disabilities organised by an NGO at the Kittur Rani Chenamma stadium in Jayanagar, had left behind her handbag when she went to receive the guard of honour. The bag contained three debit cards.

The incident came to light when she got an SMS alert on her mobile phone mentioning two withdrawals amounting to Rs 1.6 lakh from the Federal Bank card and Rs. 80,000 using her Kotak Mahindra Bank card. The transactions took place between 9.30 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Ms. Nachappa said she had jotted down the PIN numbers behind the cards, which could have helped the accused make the transactions.

Based on a complaint, the Jayanagar police, who took up investigations, found that the cash had been withdrawn from ATM kiosks in Jayanagar. “We have asked the banks to provide us details about the transactions and CCTV footage for identifying the accused,” a police official said.
