"It could be two, three or four killers," a police officer said, adding that the details of the accused will be revealed after the ongoing interrogation is completed
A day after the decomposed bodies of the elderly couple Venkateshaiah and Swarnamba were found in their residence in J.P. Nagar 1st Phase, the City police claimed on Saturday that more than one person was involved in the brutal double murder and expressed confidence that they would crack the case soon.
A senior police officer, who is familiar with the investigation, told The Hindu that they had “definite” leads on the killers. “It could be two, three or four killers,” a police officer said, adding that the details of the accused will be revealed after the ongoing interrogation is completed.
Refusing to divulge more details, the officer said the “interrogation of one will reveal details of the involvement of others”.
‘Murder for gain’
The police also confirmed that it was murder for gain and added that the post-mortem report of the couple has confirmed that the couple was smothered to death.
The almirahs in the bedroom of the ground floor residence were found ajar and the room appeared ransacked. As the police are yet to assess the valuables that were in possession of the couple, they are yet to confirm the items that are missing.
The police also said that sheer apathy of the neighbours and residents of the locality had contributed to the tragedy. They felt it was strange that none of the neighbours could smell the foul odour of the decomposed bodies. However, an official confirmed that there was no strong smell emanating from the drain when the second round of inspection was conducted, as was claimed by the neighbours. Police suspect that the murders took place on Monday afternoon.
