The Kengeri police have arrested a 30-year-old Army truck driver after he ran the vehicle over four pedestrians on Mysore Road on Monday, killing them on the spot.
A medical examination of the driver reportedly found him to be driving under the influence of alcohol and he was booked for culpable homicide.
The victims have been identified as Prakash and Anjan, both petty businessmen, and Mahesh Prasad and his wife, Mahadevi, both garment factory employees. While Prakash and Anjan are from Challaghatta, the couple was from Kolar, who came to visit their relatives for Ganesha festival. They were returning home after visiting their relatives when they were run over by the truck, the police said.
According to the police, the truck driver identified as Belgaumkar attached to Karnataka and Kerala Army Subdivision was returning to city after dropping his colleagues for Dasara rehearsal in Mysore.
“He was drunk and lost control over his vehicle, which jumped over the median and ploughed into four persons, killing them on the spot,” a police official said.
The truck rammed a goods vehicle before coming to a halt. Angry passers-by thrashed the driver before handing him over to the police. The police who took him to the custody subjected him to medical examination where the doctors confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol.
The bodies were shifted to shifted to Rajarajeshwari Nagar hospital and later handed over to the relatives after conducting post-mortem, the police said.
