When it rains, it pours, and so it happened with Bengaluru as well. Starting the month off with just 10.9 mm rainfall in the first 13 days, the city has, until July 29 morning, received 197.3 mm rainfall. As much as 137.4 mm of this was received in the last four days alone – from July 26 to 29.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said Bengaluru had received 41.8 mm rainfall between 8.30 a.m. on Thursday and 8.30 a.m. on Friday. The south-eastern parts of the city, which were brought to their knees by Friday morning, had received more rainfall than the other parts of the city. The HAL observatory of the IMD recorded 70.6 mm rainfall, compared to the 24.7 mm recorded in the Kempegowda International Airport observatory.
Area-wise
As for the area-wise breakup according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) data for the same period, Varthur received the highest rainfall (103 mm) in 24 hours, followed by Singasandra (98 mm), Bilekahalli and Kumaraswamy Layout (94 mm) and Arakere (93.5 mm). All these areas, with the exception of Kumaraswamy Layout, are in the south-east.
In fact, Bilekahalli, which was among the worst hit areas, 269.5 mm cumulative rainfall in the last seven days, between July 23 and 29.
